"The goal of EMDR treatment is to rapidly metabolize the dysfunctional residue from the past and transform it into something useful."
-Francine Shapiro, EMDR Creator

EMDR means Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. Through the use of bilateral stimulation, EMDR is more than just a Trauma therapy, it can be used to work through negative self-beliefs and help the mind organize tough experiences.
Take a moment and imagine your brain as a file room, full of filing cabinets. Most of your memories get nicely filed away each night when you sleep. When you go into REM sleep (this is where the eye movement comes into play), your brain looks at each experience from your day and files it away as it feels best. When there is an experience that is really disturbing, however, the brain leaves it out bc it wants to have the experience easily accessible for quick reference to keep you safe.
Though the mind means well here, it leaves us with an experience that is not filed away, which means every time we want to access our file room, it's right there, out in the open, and sometimes up in our face. Because it was left out to keep us safe, this event now stays alive and shows up in new experiences even when it does not apply. Now we have all these new experiences that end up getting filed only after they are filtered through the files that are left out which causes blockages, misfilings and all kinds issues moving forward.
It is important to know that the brain has a natural tendency to process information in a way that keeps us mentally healthy. Though we may question that when we look at our file room that seems in shambles right now, it is important to remember that the mind meant well when it left this file out, it was a survival technique that the brain felt was important.
With EMDR psychotherapy, we start by working on your window of tolerance, helping you gain tools and skills so you can feel safe and secure, when we venture into that file room. The actual eye movement part of EMDR will happen after that work has been done. At that point, we will venture into the file room to support and guide your brain’s natural healing process to clear the blockages and file these experiences (and those filtered through them) properly. Just like all the other memories in your file room, you won’t forget these experiences, but they will move from being a disturbance, to being just another memory, you will be able to move forward without them coming up and influencing new experiences.
